Trigonella foenum-graceum (fenugrec)

Trigonella foenum-graceum commonly referred to as Fenugreek grows in wide-open areas and is native to the Mediterranean, North Africa and Asia. They grow as tall annuals with trifoliate leaves, yellow-white pea sized flowers and contain pods which encapsulate 10-20 seeds per a pod. The seeds are harvested during the autumn season.1,2

Fenugreek was sought after in ancient Egypt to aid in childbirth and to assist in gynecological disorders, particularly with infections and inflammatory conditions. It was also considered by Hippocrates in the 5th century BC, to be a soothing herb for the body.2

Fenugreek has a vast array of health benefits, the seeds are known to stimulate appetite, relieve dyspepsia, and reduce fevers. The seeds can also be used in the treatment of gastric ulcers and gastritis due its soothing properties.3

Fenugreek has been widely studied for its ability to induce breast-milk production in difficult lactation. It is also known to decrease elevated cholesterol levels and aid in diabetes through modulating glucose levels.4

When used externally, the seeds can be used to treat vast array of dermatological conditions including boils, ulcers, burns and abscesses. Interestingly enough, the seeds can also assist in restoring taste and to freshen one’s breath.2
